Einstein's
Corner (EC) provides a place where students come to
receive tutoring for science courses and mentorship in both
academic and non-academic areas. This initiative was
created to meet the needs of the growing population of
students studying sciences here at Purchase College.
Tutors/mentors, are nominated by faculty members. Tutors
receive training on effective teaching and mentoring. One
of the goals of the Einstein Corner is to provide
assistance for students who are struggling to grasp
science-related coursework or simply want to strengthen
their existing knowledge of it. EC also fosters
camaraderie amongst science majors via peer
mentoring/tutoring. Funding for Einstein Corner is provided
by the NSF sponsored RSVP Program.
More than thirty students,
tutors and faculty members attended the Einstein Corner
Fall re-opening.
Comments about Einstein's
Corner:
Dr Taina Chao,
Associate Chemistry Professor commented that prior to
Einstein Corner, students received limited academic support
beyond the scope of her classes. She also stated that EC
tutor,
David Philbert
, who tutors for her course (General Chemistry 1) has been
effective in assisting students.
The Einstein Corner has been beneficial to me. There are
always tutors to help me in organic chemistry and cell
biology”.
David Karavilla,
Biology Junior.
I’ m currently taking General Chemistry one. I come to EC
about three times a week to receive tutoring. I’ve learned
so much from my tutor and learned how to fully understand
the material. In high school, I had a terrible chemistry
teacher and did poorly in this class, but thanks to EC and
some hard work, I’ve gone from a “C” student in chemistry to
an “A” student!!.
Noel O’Donnell,
Biology .
“My name is
Vanessa Assaro
and I really enjoy tutoring computer programming games at
EC. Einstein Corner gives the opportunity to practice my
communication skills and teaching because I hope to teach
similar subjects in the future. I love helping students
understand computers and use them to create things”.
