NIH/BRIDGES
PROGRAM
Purchase College, State University of New York (SUNY) is unlike many institutions of higher education in the U.S. because it has an outstanding
undergraduate program in the Natural Sciences that serves a high percentage of minority students (32.8%) and successfully places them in Master's
and Ph.D. programs or the workforce. It also maintains strong partnerships with other local colleges and universities that have excellent science
programs as well as with the surrounding corporate community.
Purchase College, State University of New York (SUNY) in collaboration with Westchester Community College (WCC), Dutchess Community College (DCC),
Orange County Community College (OCCC), the American Health Foundation/ Westchester Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and funding
from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has established a Bridges to the Baccalaureate Degree Program for underrepresented minority students that
will enable then to attain careers or advanced degrees in biomedical research.
- To increase the underrepresented students in the sciences.
- To provide academic and financial support for the underrepresented students, enabling them to complete a baccalaureate degree program in biology, chemistry, environmental science, math/computer science, or psychology.
- To assist degree recipients with job placement or advanced study in biomedical research.
- To increase collaborative arrangements among associate and baccalaureate degree-granting institutions and biomedical research institutions and corporations.
- Guaranteed admission to Purchase College for qualified students (see qualifications below)

- Bridges scholarship stipend to all participants as well as additional Purchase College scholarships for qualified students (minimum GPA of 3.0)
First year students must have a minimum high school average of 80, a letter of recommendation from their high school science teacher, and a written essay
expressing their interest in the Biomedical field.
Second year students are required to have a minimum GPA of 3.0, a letter of recommendation from a faculty member of the school they are attending, as well as a written
essay expressing their interest in the Biomedical field.
