Project Description:
This year I decided to make
a movie about glacial (ice) history of the Hudson Valley and its deposits.
To visualize geological formation of glacial deposits I have to show how
they were formed, the movement of glacier and subsequent creation of
moraines, fluvial deposits, etc. The problem with visualization of ancient
glacial movements is that there are no more active continental glaciers
around in the area of Hudson Valley.
The last continental glacier in
Northern Hemisphere is located in Greenland. The footage illustrates how similar
to Hudson Valley glacial processes took place more than 10,000 years ago in
Hudson Valley. The area around glacier has variety of modern glacial
landforms similar to the buried glacial deposits in Hudson Valley.
The project goal was to reach glacier margin (25-40 km) from the Kangerlussuaq
and film glacier landforms such as moraines, fluvio-glacial deposits, arctic
desert and outwash plains. This was done with the help of VECO Polar, NSF and
109th Wing from New York.
On July 16th I made a trip to the Greenland ice cap to film North Greenland Ice
Project (NGRIP) drilling operation and ice core. Thanks to Dr. Jorgen Steffensen
interview, I was able to get a story about the purpose of drilling and discovery
of Eemian (last interglacial 120,000 years ago) strata, melting water under ice
cap and Dr. Steffensen's views on global climate changes.
The total run-time is 40 min.
