Summer Environmental Internships & Entry Level Jobs   

Environmental Management Solutions, a company based in Ossining (NY) and owned by a 1988 alumnus of our program, is seeking summer interns and entry level employees.  Several part and full time lab and office positions are available, but these could develop into something more.  Special arrangements for course credit internships can be made on a case by case basis.  Salary is negotiable based on experience.

Environmental Leader Training Course   

Greenpeace is partnering with Seventh Generation to offer an all expenses paid weeklong training course for the 100 top student environmental leaders in the country.  The program is an intensive week of training, facilitated by some of the nation's top environmental leaders. 

Selected students will be flown to D.C. to work one-on-one with Greenpeace mentors on campaign strategy, message development, lobbying, recruitment, and event planning.  You will travel offsite to participate in a campaign event and will emerge from the program with the skills and tools you need to become effective leaders in the environmental movement.  Your housing, food, and flight will be fully covered.

Paid Research Position/Internship - Invader Ecology & Impacts  

I have two recently funded research projects (EPA & Sea Grant) that will study aspects of the invasion of Long Island Sound by a non-native species.  Both projects include funds to support student participation, and could cover 2 students for up to two years. 

 

Work is a mixture of lab (primary; based in Stamford, CT) and field work (CT and NY).  The experimental work could easily become the basis for a Senior Project.  An economic or policy approach is also possible.

Assistant Preserve Manager - Mianus River Gorge Preserve

The 700+ acre Mianus River Gorge Preserve is the premier land project of the Natura Conservancy and the first Natural history Landmark dedicated by the US Department of Interior.  The Preserve is seeking an Assistant Preserve Manager responsible for: stewardship of the preserve (e.g., trail maintenance), husbandry, enforcing regulations, controlling invasive plants, monitoring wildlife, and assisting with data collection for research projects. 

 

Start date:  immediately

Salary:  $15/hour

Biodiversity Educator  (full-time temporary position)

Job location: Village of Red Hook (Dutchess County) and will require some travel to Hudson Valley locations.  Hudsonia's Biodiversity Education Project teaches Hudson Valley community leaders (town & planning board members, conservation commissions, watershed coalitions, etc.) to identify and protect important ecological resources.  Our Biodiversity Assessment courses teach techniques in remote sensing and field verification for the purposes of locating and identifying habitats of ecological significance, developing habitat maps, conservation, and land use planning strategies.

 

The Biodiversity Educator is a 5-month position, assisting with Hudsonia's biodiversity assessment training programs, including preparation of related materials, coordination and implementation of lab and field workshops, program evaluation, and offering support to program participants. Specific responsibilities include assisting with the design, planning, and coordination of a "round table" event for past participants; development of guidance on digital data resources; and initiation of special projects related to the skills and interests of the SCA Member, including development of new outreach teaching tools.

 

The position starts on May 8, 2006. Applicants should have valid driver’s license; Bachelor’s degree in biology, natural resources, ecology, planning, education, GIS, or related fields; excellent written and oral communication skills; proficiency in MicroSoft Office; and good organizational skills. Experience working with the public, some GIS proficiency (ArcView 3.x or higher), and knowledge of webpage design using DreamWeaver software desirable but not required.

 

Travel expenses will be reimbursed when use of personal vehicle is necessary and travel is beyond the standard commute.  While the work schedule will follow typical business hours, applicants should be willing to work occasionally on weekends or evenings. Ecology Camp Instructors
The Institute of Ecosystem Studies is looking for two enthusiastic, knowledgeable ecology educators to lead our Summer Ecology Camp for kids in grades 2-7.  Located on 2000+ acres in the Hudson Valley, IES provides one week long day ecology camps (mid June – August 2006) that include ecology investigations in streams, forests, ponds and fields located on the property, hiking, environmental games, and nature arts&crafts.  Instructors develop curriculum, prepare materials, teach and collaborate with educational and scientific staff.  Applicants need to have completed coursework in a relevant scientific field or in education, plus have teaching experience and certification in first aid and CPR.

Job location: based in New York City with some travel to research sites.

WildMetro is a small not-for-profit organization dedicated to protecting nature in metropolitan regions. We conduct urban ecology research in and around New York City, educate children and adults, and advocate for a sensible balance of development and nature protection in urban regions.  Specific RC responsibilities include conducting field work, writing and editing research proposals and reports, analyzing data, recruiting and training volunteers, coordinating logistics, securing state and other permits, and participating in education and advocacy programs.  Successful applicants will practice animal handling techniques and write and communicate grant, educational, and presentation materials.

 

Requirements include an undergraduate degree in Biology, Ecology, or a related field; prior field or research experience; proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint; a willingness to communicate and cooperate with people from different backgrounds; and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.  Compensation will be commensurate with experience.  See link above for more information.

Westchester Municipal Planning Federation Scholarship:  The Federation is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a student with demonstrated interest in planning issues in developing suburban areas.  The application deadline is April 7, 2006.

Citizens Campaign for the Environment (CCE) is seeking one or two unpaid interns who can work anywhere between 5 and 20 hours a week.  CCE is an 80,000-member organization dedicated to the protection of the land, air and water resources of New York State and Connecticut.  Interns will conduct independent organizing, outreach, and research around campaigns to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, promote renewable energy development in the Lower Hudson Valley, as well as protection of Long Island Sound.  Interns will work closely with a registered lobbyist on the local, state and federal levels to advance policies for the protection of the ecosystem.

Michael Lawton Environmental Scholarship NY State Parks (Long Island Region) is offering paid summer internships.  The recipients gain experience in a variety of environmental disciplines including endangered species management, natural resource management, and environmental education.  Recipients are given a $2,000 scholarship, and are paid $4,000 for 10 weeks of work with the NYS Parks Department in central Long Island.  See George Kraemer (NS0017) for an application and more information.

Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases (ProMED) is organized by the International Society for Infectious Diseases (headquartered at Harvard Med School; see www.promed.org).  Interns can participate in a study of of the causes and means for prevention of current major disease threats.   (re-posted 7-Mar-06)

Scientists' Working Group on Biological and Chemical Weapons, affiliated with the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, Washington DC (www.armscontrolcenter.org).  Interns choose between:
 

(a) Chemical Weapons: existing weapons must, by international agreement, be destroyed.  Temporary storage is dangerous (leaky vessels), but current methods of destruction also have environmental impacts;
(b) Bioterrorism:  present government responses to the threat of bioterrorism are themselves a disease threat.  How can threats be minimized?   (re-posted 7-Mar-06)

Land Use Center (Pace University Law School)  Internship to assist in the evaluation of the success of 10 years of the Land Use Leadership Alliance Training Program (LULA).  Tasks include development of assessment tool, survey of program alumni, and development of GIS-based analysis of outcomes.  (for more information or to apply see Prof. George Kraemer)

Energy Project (Pace University Law School)  Internship to to develop a Geographic Location Assessment Tool for use in optimizing the siting of clean distributed generation projects across New York State.  Intern must have enough GIS experience to assist in bringing new data into the model.  Intern will also work to highlight the use of this model as a tool for ranking clean power projects in New York State  (for more information or to apply see Prof. George Kraemer)
