The following students reported their research findings at the Middle Atlantic Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society (MARM) at George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia on May 28, 2002:
Lana Sattaur on "Quantitative Variations of Male Sex Pheromone Components in Six Drosophila paulistorum Semispecies"
Debora Cambetas on "GC/MS Analysis of the Cuticular Hydrocarbons of two Hawaiian picture-winged Drosophila species"
On March 22, 2002, Merck scholars attended the Nichols Symposium: 21st Century-age of new organic materials and applications. The symposium was sponsored by the New York section of the ACS. and held at the Crown Plaza Hotel in White Plains.
On March 16, 2001, several Merck Scholars attended the William H. Nichols Distinguished Symposium Chemistry and Biology in the Twenty-First Century in White Plains, New York. This symposium included lectures on glycopeptide antiobiotics and chemical genetics, among other topics.
On November 28, 2000, a group of 8 students including 5 Merck Scholars and 3 other Chem majors, were led by Dr. Chao and Dr. Jacob of the Chemistry program for a visit to Wyeth-Ayerst Research at Pearl River, New York. The group was received and hosted by Dr. David Blum, Director for Chemical Development and his assistant, Mel Jennings. The group visited the labs where drug discovery and development were carried out. Students came away with information about how drug research is conducted at the discovery chemistry laboratories. Students were also treated to a visit of the larger scale work at the Kilo Labs. The visit ended with a lunch with Dr. Blum and Mr. Jennings where questions raised by students were answered. Students were very impressed by what they saw and some were inspired to re-evaluate their future career plans!
Adriana Gheta attended the Northeast Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society at University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut on June 18-20, 2000. Adriana also reported her research findings at the 222th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society at Chicago, August 30, 2002.
Kelly Galasso reported on her project at a meeting on Programmed Cell Death at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, November 9-13, 2001.
