Biology/Chemistry Interdisciplinary Program
Merck/AAAS Undergraduate Science Research Program

In February 2000, the Division of Natural Sciences at SUNY/Purchase was awarded a three-year (renewable) research grant from the Merck Foundation for the purpose of supporting undergraduate research in the chemistry/biology areas. The grant was awarded in part on the basis of the strength of the two academic programs and the strong tradition of undergraduate research at Purchase.

The Merck/AAAS grant is used primarily to provide financial support for student research. Students at Purchase are required to complete a senior project; most of the grant support is used towards students who are undertaking interdisciplinary research projects for their senior projects. In addition, support is available for exceptionally promising students at an early stage of their college career to conduct interdisciplinary research on a smaller scale. Funds are also available for students to travel to scientific meetings to report their research findings. In an effort to establish a forum for interactive exchange of ideas as well as having the program impacting more students and the community in general, two academic programs were established- a Lecture Series and an Interdisciplinary Colloquia. These web pages document the past and current programs sponsored by the Merck/AAAS Undergraduate Science Program Award.
